El Bondi Gluten-Free Empanadas
We are El Bondi Gluten-Free Empanadas and we make authentic, Argentine-style, and gluten-free empanadas. We handcraft them and cook them in a dedicated facility that does not process wheat or gluten to avoid cross contamination, making them safe to be consumed by those with celiac disease.
Our Story
Hi! My name is Fernanda and I am the owner of El Bondi Gluten-Free Empanadas. I was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina and lived all of my life there until January 2019, when I moved with my family to San Diego, CA. I have a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA) and a Bachelor’s degree in HR and before moving to the United States, I used to work in the diplomatic sector promoting international trade.
My family’s gluten-free journey started back in January 2019, when my daughter was diagnosed with celiac disease at the age of 5, a few days before we moved internationally from Argentina to California.
Since then, as every celiac parent knows, it has been a daily challenge, apart from the frustration and sadness provoked from seeing your kid crying at every birthday party from not being able to share and enjoy the food everyone else can eat. One of the things that my daughter missed the most was empanadas and since then, I’ve committed to providing her gluten-free and celiac-safe options that resemble the ones she used to eat back in Argentina. As the years have gone by, the need to provide other options to the gluten-free community as well as to share our culture and family heritage in each handcrafted empanada became inevitable. Now, I envision my abuelas smiling somewhere out there knowing that their recipes are being enjoyed by many, which brings me great joy and happiness.

Hashbrown is Waiting for You!
Late one Sunday night in mid-February, a blind, two-year-old terrier blend named Hashbrown emerged from the large luggage carousel at San Diego International Airport. The brindle-coated boy had just traveled 2,500 miles across the Pacific from Maui to San Diego in search of a second chance.
Hashbrown’s story began in Wailuku, Maui, where he was found wandering alone, scared, disoriented, and without a collar or microchip. When he was brought to Maui Humane Society, veterinarians discovered he had likely been blind since birth.
Despite his lack of sight, Hashbrown’s spirit shone brightly. He loved every dog and person he met, greeting them with warmth and trust. But Maui’s shelters have been overwhelmed since the devastating wildfires nearly two years ago, leaving countless animals waiting far too long for homes.
Wanting to help, Helen Woodward Animal Center arranged Hashbrown’s transport to San Diego. Once here, he quickly bonded with his foster family and their dogs, proving that love needs no eyes to see. Hashbrown briefly found a home in June, but it wasn’t the right match. He does best with a calm pet sibling around his size (or smaller) to help guide him and would thrive in a home with kids over age 10.
“He is as wonderful as they described,” says Adoption Services Director Kendall Schulz. “If you want to know what resilience and kindness look like, come meet Hashbrown. Seeing is believing.” Now, Hashbrown is ready to find his perfect forever family, one that can show him that even in darkness, the light of love shines brightest!
Hashbrown is waiting for you at Helen Woodward Animal Center, which is located at 6461 El Apajo Road in Rancho Santa Fe. Kennels are open seven days a week; Monday through Thursday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information call 858-756-4117, extension #1, or visit animalcenter.org.
