LeRoy’s Sweet Potato Shack

LeRoy’s Sweet Potato Shack was established in San Diego’s North County in the city of Oceanside, California. Our fresh baked goods, made with real ingredients, are reminiscent of grandma’s cooking. At LeRoy’s Sweet Potato Shack, we bake per order. Inspired by Leroy’s cooking, and the support of our loyal following, our Sweet Potato Shack is now a reality for the larger community to enjoy.

The Inspiration

Born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, Leroy D. Bolden (1940 – 2021) learned to cook at the young age of 12. As his mother worked to support the family, he became the family cook, but it was clear to the elder women in the neighborhood that he loved to bake. They would share with him their personal baking tips to get the right taste, texture, and moisture in his baked goods.

Leroy had been making delicious cakes, pies, cobblers, cheesecakes, and cookies for more than 50 years just like the grandmothers. Both he and his cooking were very well known in his community. Leroy and his desserts were the inspiration behind the creation of LeRoy’s Sweet Potato Shack!

The Creation

Leroy had never thought about selling his baked goods. He was always content to share them with everyone, expecting nothing more in return than the reaction of tasteful enjoyment. In 2000, Leroy’s church brother tasted the Sweet Potato Cake and convinced Leroy that he should share his desserts with the community-at-large. Nine years later, Bryan Moore helped “The Shack” become a reality. Bryan and Leroy had worked together for more than 12 years caring for out-of-home youth.

Born in St. Stephens, Alabama Bryan was no stranger to Southern “country-style” baking. Raised on his mother’s sweet potato pie and exposed to baking classes in junior high school, it was only a matter of time before Bryan learned how to bake them. He began baking under Leroy’s tutelage in 2001 and to this day finds fulfillment in providing others with memorable tastes of home cooking.

The Memory

Leroy’s spirit will last forever not only in the baby showers, birthdays, parties, holidays, graduations, weddings, family gatherings, or simple after-dinner dessert times, but also in the aromas, tastes, and smiles associated with those wonderful, memorable times.

Let LeRoy’s Sweet Potato Shack provide the desserts for your next special occasion, because every dessert is made with love and history, as if it were the very first one you tasted – reminiscent of grandma’s baking!

This 9-month-old Terrier-Hound blend is one of the sweetest, smartest dogs you’ll ever meet! Cheese is a total genius who knows exactly where his kennel is, where his favorite play yards are, and even knows his favorite walking route like the back of his paw. But his intelligence isn’t the only thing that makes him special. He’s incredibly friendly and, within minutes of meeting you, he’ll be flopped over on his back asking for belly rubs and trying to cuddle up close. ❤️

And when it comes to playtime, Cheese has just the right amount of energy! He’s always up for a game of fetch or tug-of-war and will happily bring a smile to your face. But when playtime is over, he’s just as content to settle in beside you for some quality cuddle time. 🧀🐾
